attend and fill the area between the Capitol and the Washington Monument. Consistent with our wish to be hospitable to His Holiness and to the persons coming to see him, we have offered space in the Castle Building for the Pope and his party to robe and refresh themselves after the Mass. A small temporary exhibition of portraits of American Cardinals, Bishops, and Saints will be on display in the Great Hall to be viewed by the Pope and his party as they enter and leave the building through the north door.

With the anticipated crowds on the Mall (many persons are expected to arrive on Saturday and camp that evening), the Institution's museums and galleries will extend their hours from 10:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday evenings. Cafeterias in the History and Technology, Natural History, and Air and Space Buildings will remain open throughout these periods. In addition, arrangements are being made to serve refreshments and box lunches from stands on the terrace of the History and Technology Building.

Other Sunday activities appropriate for this notable occasion will include a program of woodwind and timpani music played by musicians from the National Symphony Orchestra from the porte-cochere over the north entrance to the Castle (it may be recalled that a similar presentation was made part of Queen Elizabeth's visit in 1976) and, as part of the Folklife Festival (October 3-8), a program of American religious music performed by groups of Polish, African, Mexican, Italian, Jewish, Greek, and American Indian descent. The schedule of performances and the use of the audio system covering the entire Mall is being coordinated with the Archdiocese of Washington.
