Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen & Abandoned Lands,
OFFICE OF SUPERINTENDENT OF EDUCATION.
Raleigh, N.C., April 12, 1867.

Col. Jacob F. Chur,
AAA Genl. B.R.F. & A-L.

Colonel,

As the duties devolving upon me in my official position have largely increased during the present school-year, so that it seems impossible to discharge them all promptly and properly without clerical aid, I have the honor hereby respectfully to request that I be authorized by the Asst. Commissr to hire, at the expense of the Bureau, a clerk at a salary of one hundred dollars per month. My extensive official correspondence within and beyond the State, reports and numerous business-papers to be prepared, are of themselves more than sufficient to furnish constant employment for one person, so that, if I am confined to my office to attend to these, I am obliged to neglect important official duties in the outside field, to the serious detriment of the educational work. I feel it due, therefore, to the interests of the public service to address to you this petition.

Very respectfully,
Your obt. servt.
F.A. Fiske,
Supt. of Educa^n
