also about fifty bushels meal. I do not know exactly how much but think it was about 50 bushels. —

Edmund Hawkins [[encircled]] 2: [[/encircled]] being first duly sworn deposes and says:

My name is Edmund Hawkins. I live in Henderson, Granville Co. state of North Carolina. I know Thomas N. Alston, and the ptff. Israel Greene, When the contract between Alston and Greene was made I was present. The contract was made for two years. The terms agreed upon, were that he, the said Greene, should hire hands for the purpose of getting out staves for said Alston, for such services Greene was to receive one half of whatever the staves sold at, to be paid by said Alston to said Greene so soon as the straws were sold.

Transcription Notes:
Pretty sure it's "deposed" (not "deporss") but typed what I saw. Also, put question marks around "Greene" because the penmanship is difficult -second transcriber made the call to change "deporss" to "deposes" "staves" not "straws," per later documents in this series. -- Beth
