Jany 20" 1868

Enoch Powell being duly sworn deposes & says

My name is Enoch Powell. I reside in Franklin Co about ten miles from Louisburg N.C.
     
I was present when Mr T. N. F. Alston Entered into an agreement with George Davis (F) to cut staves on Alstons plantation in Warren Co near Littleton Depot on R & G RR. As nearly as I can recollect this took place some time in Jany 1867. Know Israel Green (F). He was not a party to the original contract but went in as a partner of George Davis. The terms of the contract between Mr Alston & Davis were that Mr Alston was to furnish the timber & the steers to haul with & pay ½ of the feed for the steers — that George Davis was to furnish all the hands necessary to carry on the business, to pay & feed the same & to provide teamsters for the teams at his Expense. That Alston & Davis were to share Equally in the proceeds of the Stave cutting business. The understanding between the parties was — so far as I understand the thing — that Davis was to go down to the place in Warren & they would see if there was any money in it or not —
