Bureau of Refugees, Freedmen & Abandoned Lands,
OFFICE OF SUPERINTENDENT OF EDUCATION.
Raleigh, N. C., May 2, 1867

Rev. W. L. Miller,
Statesville, N. C.

Dear Sir,

Your letter of the 29th ult. addressed to Maj. Gen. Howard, sent to me for my perusal with the request, in a note accompanying it, for an expression of opinion on my part, was duly received. I heartily wish that your petition might be granted, if practicable, as I believe that you are faithfully and successfully laboring for the religious and educational interests of the Freedmen in this state, as Agent of the Assembly's Committee on Freedmen, in establishing churches and schools and supplying ministers and teachers, and that you are emphatically deserving of sympathy and any aid that can consistently be bestowed.

Yours respectfully,
F. A. Fiske,
Supt. of Education.
