I came to this State to teach in the Colored Schools in Oct 1865, with a commission from N.Y. and contract to pay any travelling expenses coming and returning. When the year's returned and my commission expired I had been exposed to Small Pox and could not return. Then took severe cold which affected my lungs so that the Bureau Physician advised my remaining South during Cold weather. So decided to remain a few months and give my time to the colored children.
