Head Quarters 40th [[N Set?]].

Major General O. O. Howard
Commissioner Freedmen's Bureau
Washington D.C.

Sir

The regiment to which I have been appointed Chaplain is Scattered over two States - making it very difficult for me to reach it and as I am anxious to be engaged in Some useful Service for the Government, I would most respectfully ask to be assigned to Some Specific work in the Bureau - Some work that would enable me to visit the companies of my command stationed at Goldsboro, Wilmington, Charleston &c. Such an arrangement would meet with the hearty concurrence of my Commanding officer Colonel N. A. Miles, Assistant Commissioner for this State. An Inspectorship or the Superintendency of Education would not only enable me to aid the Bureau, but it would also furnish the opportunity of visiting the troops and preaching to them on Sabbath. You will probably remember me as formerly connected with the old Army of the Kennesaw and as the author of the "Recollections of Sherman's Campaign through the Far South."

I am your obed Servt
