Sufficient evidence of the use of violence by Harris and Alonzo and Dallas Williams towards Save Conyers when the latter was arrested was not shown to justify my interference in his behalf.

The statements made by Wynne, that "Save Conyers" made oath before Capt or Lieut Hay" etc are utterly false. Save Conyers had never on any occasion made oath before me. On the contrary, when Save first informed me of the carrying of arms by Harris and Williams, I expressly disclaimed any right or power to interfere and distinctly told him that the Sheriff of the County was the proper party to examine into the matter. On the same morning Save spoke to me about this I saw Sheriff E. A. Gafton[[guess]] and told him what I had heard suggesting that he would inquire carefully into it - that it was his duty so to do. But I did not pretend to give any [[underlined]] order [[/underlined]] in the premises, and Wynne's notion that the Sheriff was "ordered to arrest and try said Harris" if intended to apply to any order given by me, is unqualified by
