[[underlined]]May 30[[/underlined]] -- Woke up at Tucumcari, and had breakfast before reaching Santa Rosa. Raining & ponds full of water. Vegetation very late, grass short but thick, mesquite not leaved out, youcca glauca not yet in flower but full of buds. Verbenas, Enothera & a few little yellow flowers in blossom. Guterrizia getting green.

The same at Santa Rosa & over the ridge to Leoncito & Torrance. Near Torrance there are yellow pines on the crests & north slopes of the mesas and little peaks on both sides of the RR and junipers & nut pines over the rest of the county except grassy flats & valleys. To the west the Godiva Mts, are black with timber that seems to be yellow pine while still farther west to the Chupedaro Mesa is black with timber that seems also to be yellow pine. Southeast of Ancho the Jicarillas show considerable yellow pine along the tops and north slope & nut pine & juniper over the sides. as does also Carrizozo Peak & range.

Transcription Notes:
Zucumcari or Tucumcari? youcca = yucca Leoncito - while his spelling ends in'a', Google Maps shows a Leoncito located near Torrance. Bailey seems to spell this Torrence.
