& grassy & characterized as much by absence of chapparel as by its zone marking species. Besides Pinus coulteri & Quercus californica there are scattered bunches of a big smooth berred Arctostaphylos [[space]], Rhamnos californicus, Symphorocarpos arophilus, Wyethia [[space]] with woody leaves the size of my hand, a woody leafed Thermopsis, a big pink purple Lupine [[space]], wild roses and in shady places patches of Pteris.

The little farms are mainly meadow with orchards of thrifty apple trees full of young fruit & some potato & corn patches. The Wynola Valley, just west of Julien is famous for its cherries, both in abundance & quality.

The road began to go down a long grade into the San Diego River Canyon & for about 2000 feet was in Upper Sonoran chapparel of the standard species, largely Adenostoma & Ceanothus & scrub oak, but with Rhus, Hetteromdes[[?]], Prunus iliafolia
