the eucalyptis, Washingtonia palm, Pepper trees, umbrella trees, Oleander & big Agave grow to perfection while along the slopes to the south & west are extensive & beautiful groves of oranges & olives, of old, healthy, bearing trees. The whole valley except the damp bottom should be mapped for Lower Sonoran. It is sheltered from the ocean winds by the mountains to the west, is rather dry & hot.

[[underline]]June 26[[/underline]]. Got an early start from Lakeside and driving due west about 5 miles, turned north & followed up Sycamore Cr. a few miles, then over the ridges by a new & easy grade to the summit & down into Poway Valley, then over a low ridge & down to the Bernardino River & then slightly up & over to Escondido.

The sides of the valley west of Lakeside & of Sycamore Creek valley are Lower Sonoran, with little to mark them except absence of most of the species of Upper Sonoran chapperal, and its place filled by Opuntia englemani, white sage,
