[[underline]]Santa Ana to San Francisco [[/underline]]

[[underline]]July 4[[/underline]] - Got up at 5:30 at Santa Ana & reached Los Angeles at 7. Left for San Francisco by coast line S.P. for San Francisco.

From Santa Ana to Los Angeles is level, fertile, highly cultivated valley country on extensive hay & grain fields. Great orange groves of beautiful trees loaded with fruit (part of them) are seen in many places, English walnut groves are numerous, healthy & full of fruit. Vineyards, peach & apricot orchards are common. Eucalyptus groves & rows of palms & pepper trees are seen all along. There is no chapperal. The whole valley is intense Lower [[Eo...]] with no marked trace of Upper.

Leaving Los Angeles we follow up the river valley to Trapineo[[?]] & Burbank - [[strikethrough]] Feroano [[/strikethrough]] Chatsworth, a wide, flat valley, evidently rather dry, often sandy & desert like with much cactus (O. englemanii? & echinocarpa?), with white sage & Hosakia glabra & several forms of Baccharis & other composite shrubs.
