A few neglected orange trees in a weedy yard cling to existance. No more Pines in sight. At San Miguel a few pepper trees are seen but there is very little farming & that is of the worst kind. All orchards are full of grass & weeds & most are dieing. Cattle & hay are the chief industry. Still the Lower Sonoral part of the valley widens & great parks or rolling mesas are all wild oats & big oaks.

To Kings City & an hour beyond when it got dark. The valley is similar, thinly settled, mainly hay & grazing. The little farming is poor & carelessly done. Upper Sonoran chapparel covers the ranges to the west with tall pines often showing along the crests of the higher ridges. We run so close under the foothills on the east as to hide all beyond except now & then a glimpse
