Leaving Glendale at 12:30 we wound along the narrow canyon of Cow Creek with dense forest up the steep slopes on both sides. A mixture of Canadian & Transition zone species run through the canyon, one predominating on a cold slope & the other on a hot slope. Until we near the Umpqua Valley. Here it opens out at Glenbrook and at Biddle is a wide farm valley full of good fields and orchards Pseudotsuga, Abies, Taxus, Castanopsis, & Vaccinium microphyllum & ovatum are mostly left behind in the canyons while Ponderosa pine, Quercus kellogi, ^[[& Californica]] Madrone, Maple, ash, and [[space]] are the principal trees along the edges of the open valley. The fields show mostly plowed ground or orchards. Apple, peach, plum & pear orchards are extensive and thrifty & some of the apple & pear trees are still loaded with fruit.
