5) The pay is as good as it is in any department of the Company.

6) I would be located here or possibly eventually in Erie, which isn't much further from Syracuse than Schenectady but is [[underlined]] 400 miles [[/underlined]] nearer Louisville than Schenectady which would be wonderful for Willie and practically as good for me.

7) It is work where one can see that one is accomplishing something -- see tangible results and yet do theoretical work too.

And so I am going to see just what the chances are of getting it now. It will mean that I will probably have to take two or three tests but that is all indefinite now.

[[underlined]]] To Mother, July 31, 1925: [[/underlined]] The important event of my day today was my talk with Mr. Hanna, the head of the Railway Motor Department. He is one of the pleasantest men I ever talked with. I liked him immediately. He did not look at all as I had pictured him. Somehow I had imagined his as a big burly gentleman. But he is only medium-sized, about 52 or so years old, with perfectly white bushy hair like Judge Cheney and a very rosy complexion -- smooth faced. He looks something like Judge Cheney only better looking, I would say. He explained to me that at present the work is slack, as it is in every department at present, so there is no opening right now. However, there will be one without doubt very soon, when things pick up, and then I can get in. In the meantime, he advised me to get some tests, taking those here first and taking Erie last. He said he could arrange the Erie test for me whenever I want to take it. He asked me to come up and see them often and keep in touch with them. I couldn't see Mr. Pfeif today as I was too busy but shall see him tomorrow about changing to test.

[[underlined]] To Willie, July 31, 1925: [[/underlined]] Willie dearest, don't worry about the future. I know it is going to turn out just wonderfully for us if only we trust -- I know it is. It is back to overalls again and factory hours and black fingernails but I shall be happy for I shall be going along the right path for you-- for us both. I don't mind. I shall rather enjoy it again for a change. I know Mr. Steenstrup doesn't want me to leave him but he also wants me to get into what I like best, so he is very nice about it all.
...... I shall see Mr. Pfeif, Director of Industrial Relations, and arrange to get over onto test. Then I shall find out what can or cannot be done regarding the pay end of it. I shan't make any speculations regarding that. What I should like to do is take a couple of test here and then go to Erie about the first of the year and finish up there. Tomorrow, after I have talked to Mr. Pfeif, I will know pretty definitely what lies ahead.
