how much or little that is, we rank with the greatest, for one's best is one's greatest effort."

This seemed to me a rather gloomy time of year to look for an apartment when all is dry and barren, the grass, the trees -- and a wild wind blowing everywhere. I spent a good part of yesterday and today surveying the various neighborhoods of the town and have decided that the west side is the most desirable. So now I must find an apartment for us, one we shall be satisfied with. In spite of the fact that I was looking for our future home, today is strangely blue and depressing to me. It made me feel somewhat better to come out to my room this evening and write a long letter to Willie and one to Mr. Fritschner.

All I want to write for today is something I read in Elbert Hubbard's Scrap Book:
To awaken each morning with a smile brightening my face, to greet the day with reverence for the opportunities it contains; to approach my work with a clean mind; to hold ever before me, even in the doing of little things, the Ultimate Purpose toward which I am working; to meet men and women with laughter on my lips and love in my heart; to be gentle, kind and courteous through all the hours; to approach the night with weariness that ever woos sleep and the joy that comes from work well done -- this is how I desire to waste wisely my days.
--Thomas Dreier

His thought is my great desire; there's nothing more to say. And here is another line that is very good:

It may make a difference to all eternity, whether we do right or wrong today.

This evening Bob Clingerman and I went up to the Sterretts to play bridge with Lenore and Frances, and had a bully good time. I don't believe I'm seeing too much of Lenore. To go there and be in her home and listen to her music seems to fill a gap -- it must be the gap that being away from Willie makes. Looked at one of the West 10th apartments and also one on West 9th and then wrote Willie all the details. Personally I lean toward West 9th.
