Along the crests and north slopes of the 2 ^ [insertion]] main [[/insertion]] ranges Upper Sonoran species such as [[red checkmark]] Juniperus monosperma, [[red checkmark]] Dasylerian, [[red checkmark]] Nolina, [[red checkmark]] Schoenolirion, [[red checkmark]] Cassia, [[red checkmark]] Mimosa biuncifera & [[red checkmark]] Agave take the place of the valley species None of the ranges have any timber except an occasional Juniper. The big [[red checkmark]] agaves go to the top of peaks at least 500 or 1000 feet above the passes. The little range just east of Hachita has no Juniper or [[red checkmark]] agaves near the pass and is so low as to be much mixed with Upper & Lower Sonoran species.
We reached the Valley de las Playas late and found the big central playa flooded while other sheets of water could be seen to the north & south. We started to cross the big Playa near the middle but found the shore muddy & as it was getting dark were afraid to risk it as we could not tell how deep the water & sand might be.
So camped on the east side in plain sight of ranches & good water on the west shore. The horses drank some of the alkaline water & we used it for washing but had enough in our canteens
