The Tulerosa Mts. come down close to the Negrita on the North but a strip of Upper Sonoran covers the lower S.W. slopes, tho Transition zone timber comes down the gulches and makes perfect connection across the canyon to the Mogollons, as it does also across in a solid body to the Elk Mts.
The Upper Nigreta canyon is a beautiful narrow valley with open pine woods, a beautiful stream and ideal camp grounds all along. There are a few old cabins but no occupied ranches. The trail is good most of the way except a few rough narrows and steep stony trails up onto the mesa & back in below.
At a salt trough we saw a little white tail buck & doe & Hotchkiss shot the buck, a two year old in the gray coat & 2 point velvet horns. We carried it along on the pack & skinned it at night. Would weigh about 75 lbs.
