in a downtown Chicago hotel for some railroad executives. Insull was having a tea party in the same hotel coincidentally. Soon, there was almost no one at Insull's party & all of them were at Monroe's. The next morning Insull ordered every job he had on order with G.E. held up until Monroe came over & apologized – threatened to cancel the orders otherwise. Monroe had no choice but to put his tail between his legs & go over, no doubt wanting to kill him instead. They say Insull made all the G.E. bigwigs contribute heavily to his Opera also. At another time, he gave G.E. bonds as collateral for a loan when the bonds were already pledged as collateral for something else.

Extract from conversation by W.S.H. Hamilton who was in Erie today, re high resistance bars on Cleveland armatures – "Now, look here, Maurice. We are running a strictly high class passenger service in Cleveland – nothing else. And we don't have but six spare motors and two spare armatures to protect us. Now, if we should suddenly get an epidemic of failures on account of these bad armatures and had to reneg on some of the service, the powers that be would want to know why we didn't fix'em. On a railroad there are only two questions in a case like that. 'Was it fixed?' [[strikethrough]] and [[/strikethrough]] or 'Wasn't it fixed?" And if it wasn't fixed, you'll suddenly find yourself making the acquaintance of a park bench. – The fact you're only five miles or so from your terminal don't mean a thing. If you're standing there tied up with the 'Commodore Vanderbilt' tied to your tail, it's just as bad as tho you were 200 miles from nowhere."
