Went to the first symphony concert at Chautauqua tonight with Antoine soloing.  A very fine and for the most part, thrilling performance, with Brahms, Dvorak, Richard Strauss. [[Chubby??]] Josephine's voice was pure and lovely and brought tears in spots. Mother looks frail and old. My heart goes out to her. But she seems to feel pretty well up there - better I think than here.

Compared the maximum and continuous output curves today of the 1931 proposed 6000HP for New York Central main line electrification and the New Haven 0361 and Penna. GG1 machines. Showed Maurice that the 6000HP would not "run the pants off" the GG1 because of adhesion limitations. Analysis, original thought, carefully prepared trains of argument, are very satisfying. There is nothing more satisfactory than producing something of one's own, be it through work or thought.

Played a "no money" game of poker at Scarboroughs tonight - Willie, Maybelle, Colonel, Walter, Postlethwaite and I. The banker was very pleasant tonight - never saw him to quite such good advantage before. And I was surprised at how much fun poker could be without a money angle. We really had a lot of fun.
