The Union Pacific is now running on the test track; had her up near 70 MPH today. But from conversation I overheard between Guynes and Andrews over long distance (Maurice's end only) I gathered they are still in boiler and turbine trouble. This job is by far the most costly undertaking the Railway Dept. of the G.E. has ever under taken and today it is more clouded in doubt than ever. Will it ever be a commercial success? Much as I hope so, I must confess pessimism. If it ever is, it must be simplified in my opinion. I doubt if they have yet had a full day of power plant operation that has not been spotted by a failure of some kind.

Ben and Tony Luther came in this evening for a chat a Tom Collins, Ben having worked on the V.P. until about 10:30PM. Discussing the heat, the Colonel said he always took a nap on the floor. I was surprised and Willie said Becky Moore claims out in Illinois in her home in the summer heat, they would lie on the linoleum in the kitchen - it was the coolest place in the house.

The Colonel pulled out for Louisville at 8AM - couldn't keep him any longer. He was restless to get back to the store and see how things are going. So we are alone again and Sunday morning we leave for Shanty Shane Ely, Vt. for a two weeks vacation. Finally settled it and made reservations for Aug. 2 next Tuesday, the nearest we could get what we wanted. Had a lot of dope from various places and picked this. It looks ideal for us. The diary will soon tell the tale.
