Friday I cleaned up well at the office. Calculated 0361 for 3000 tons from Bay Ridge to New Rochelle Jct. and told Maurice the preventive coils would run hot. He had just received a wire from the Pennsy, saying one of the GGI's in freight service had just burned up her preventative coils so he was pretty well impressed. This evening, spent considerable time on vacation preparations.

A wild, high pressure day getting ready to hop off for Shanty Shane tomorrow.

Erie, Pa, July 31, '38. Sunday.
Got away at 10:40AM for a leisurely cruise to Vermont. Had a grand dinner at Roycroft Inn at East Aurora, then proceeded along the familiar U.S. 20 thru the finger lake section. We crossed over from Auburn to Pompey through a district I hadn't seen for the most part, south of Syracuse, rolling through the beautiful long, patchwork valleys and up over the high, cultivated and wooded hills, a beautiful country - "the hills of home." Bab said, "You were lucky, Daddy, to live in a place like this." And this evening my dream came true. We tied up in a pleasant cabin camp near Cazanovia.

The cocks crowing awakened us this morning and after a good breakfast at the camp dining room, we went on our way through Cherry Valley to Schenectady where we took lunch at [[?Pelyrs]], my old hangout of test days. Did a little shopping, showed the children the G.E. at a distance, and then headed for Saratoga where we hit the only poor road of the trip, rebuilding the road from Schenectady to Ballston Spa. - Glens Falls, Hudson Falls, Whitehall and then through Vermont to Rutland where
