we had dinner. We had a "Cabin Trails" camp in mind at Menden, just east of Rutland, so we proceeded there before dinner to get settled, and we hit a near cyclone-cloudburst combined as we arrived at the cabins. It was so violent we couldn't get out of the car even though we were parked at the cabin steps. Thunder and lightning combined with wind and rain to make one feel rather uneasy - Willie admitted later she was about petrified. But it all passed and after [[strikethrough]] th [[/strikethrough]] drying out the wet bedding, etc. we had a good nights rest.

Shanty Shane, Ely, Vt.
August 2, 1938.
Woke up this morning to find them attending a cow and loading a horse on a truck at a red, freshly painted Vermont barn across the road. Got away early and breakfasted at Woodstock in a new, modernistic coffee shop. Killed as much time as possible on way to Ely as we weren't to arrive here till afternoon. Saw Dartmouth at Hanover. Had luncheon at Fairlee, Vt. at a combination coffee-gift shop along the Connecticutt River. Then after considerable searching around Lake Fairlee, found Shanty Shane. At first sight it appeared a bit rough but we soon discovered it to be about all we had hoped for. Bab & Rog caught the ox cart hauled by "John" and "Jake" and went swimming without loss of time. We took it easy, unpacking & getting the lay of the land. A bridge session in the evening got us acquainted with a number of the people, and to bed in Cabin 14 for a good night's sleep. Things look pretty good.
