egg although very trying sometimes. I have always liked Jim and believed he was honest and meant well. He has always been friendly, even after our worst arguments. He never seemed to hold a grudge and could take it. I am very much broken up about this.
Today we learned the sad truth about "Happy." He ran away and was seen hanging around the corner of 8th and Lincoln near the stores for several days. Then he was run over by the traffic there. We haven't told the children about his death. But I could cry every time I think about him - in spite of his wildness, he was as cute a kitten as I have ever seen and so full of pep. It all proves that the city is no place for pets. The other cat we are going to let go. In fact, we let her out this morning and this evening she hasn't returned.
Learned today that Walter Scarborough's mother died suddenly and he and Maybelle are in Texas. Also Rosalind is still in Swampscott because Bruce has been ill with fever and sore throat.
This evening I ran through Uzzell's "Writing as a Career" which I took to Vermont and scarcely touched there. It gave me food for thought, particularly on my chances to ever doing anything unless I set up a regular schedule of writing & stick to it. That is the thing I must decide - if I don't do it, I'm sure I shan't amount to anything.
