was staying with the Turm's while Mr. Taft went to the Oxford barn dance again last week. Mary appeared with two counsellors from one of the camps and when beer was produced for some refreshments in the Taft porch, Ruby came out and ordered them away - said her Mother wouldn't stand for any beer parties in her cottage - quite some spunk for an 11 year old. And Mary! Alas, "Bashful" evidently wasn't too sedate for a little fun either. - Taft said the Bowers drove Mrs. Taft to White River Jct. to meet him and he wasn't surprised Mrs. Bowers has heart trouble - he never had such a wild ride back to Shanty Shane, sailing up to curves at 50 MPH, slamming on the brakes and around on two wheels. Taft had another choice piece of gossip. It seems Mrs. Asche's "Mlle." was talking more than she perhaps should, and let out that Mr. Asche is in the oil business, is very gay and fond of the ladies, that they have a magnificent home and throw some exceedingly wild parties - the latter accounting again for why Mrs. Asche looks a bit lined.

I think without question, Bob is one of the most calmly lazy people I have ever known. It's about the only thing I have against him and sometimes it irritates me exceedingly. Had lunch in the G.E. luncheon club, then went to New Rochelle to see Jim Bracken. Stopped first at the New Rochelle Y.M.C.A. to call Ralston to see if he could make a golf date with Johnnie, Jim Smith and me, which fell through because he couldn't
