vigorous days, cozy evenings, the brilliant sweep of blazing snowy landscapes.
Tonight I began studying Uzzell in earnest, starting to do the assignments on The Principles of Drama, and derived great satisfaction therefrom.

Sept. 6, 1938.
This is my day off at the plant - one day every other week - 10% cut - so I took it this time.  It is the first day off I've taken since this business started early in July except that I did take two extra days of vacation by way of making up.  Willie and I played 9 holes of golf at Glenwood and I was rotten, getting a 50 on that baby's course - par 32.  I did lay out one 250 yd. and two 200 yd. drives however, and I didn't slice, so there was a little to be encouraged about.  Much work about the place today - wash car, clean furnace, cut lawn, fix driveway - and do diary, write to Peg Durham, and do considerable on Uzzell's assignments, which I find coming easier and actually suggesting plots to me.  So I see progress.  Bab & Rog started school today.  Bab ostensibly with reluctance, Rog with very frank enthusiasm starting first grade.  He claimed tonight he had already learned to read.

Wrote a long letter to Maurice today giving my ideas on the New Haven locomotive development over-run and to my surprise he accepted it without a change and I believe will send it to Cash, Emmet, Muir and HLA.  I was glad of it as, by writing a reasonable letter, I hope to head off a wild one that Maurice was ripe to get off.  The plan worked splendidly - so far at least.
Spent entire evening studying Uzzell and am convinced that a thorough drill on much of his assignment work
