utterly incomplete and hopeless to work with. Every time I think of the murder he gets away with, it burns me up! If I had his rating sheet to fill out right now, I think I'd blast him like he was never blasted before - the lazy, indolent, good-for-nothing, arrogant, conceited ass! I sometimes wonder what would happen if I wrote a letter to Woodward, with copies to everybody giving an exact account of his conduct on this test. Would it do any good or would he vindicate himself someway? It's his "way" with the higher-ups that gets him by.

They had a reunion with Maurice this afternoon to get up another "line" of industrial locomotives; I begged off to work on the test records. Rudy Krape emerged with orders to go to Norfolk, Va. and acted terribly abused when all the time, he [[underlined]] loved [[/underlined]] it. Rudy gets away at every opportunity and makes all the opportunities he can, and then pretends he hates it. Jake is all riled up because Maurice sent Bob Barrell to Colorado on Jake's Pike's Peak job, in a manner similar to his dispatching Barrell to Dearborn without me once, which ultimately burned me up and I told Maurice so in so many words at the time. He didn't do it again. Jake is determined to present an ultimatum also.

Had a nice letter from Frank Collis Bowers today saying he finally saw the semi-finals and enjoyed them - to let him know ahead when I'm coming to N.Y. again - bring Willie this winter, etc. To which I replied "Dear Collis." Ha, ha! Bowers is OK. and his wife is A-1 too. I admired her as a hostess particularly.

European situation more tense than ever with war imminent any hour! It looks as though Hitler will have to fight or back down and lose face, either one of which will probably finish him sooner or later. But if it's a fight, it's going to be horrible while it lasts - horrible beyond imagination!
