most direct route and I thought for a while we would never get there.  The ladies were all upset as it was way after dinner time and we had raw hamburger as the "piece de resistance", so we were up against it without stopping and making a fire.  But Joe got us through successfully at last after going about 15 miles out of our way.  As a result, the picnic tasted better than ever.  Afterward, football, softball, shooting.

Phillis (Adams) Brightfelt was there with Jack and somehow, the old attraction was gone.  There was a time when I thought she was almost the ideal girl.  But somehow, in that crowd at least, and under those circumstances, she was just another wife.  The most arresting thing about her was the way her dark blue slacks fitted her, which made me think of Bob Wade's famed remark as she passed once:  "God, every time I see her, I almost faint!"  Well, I guess she's a very fine girl and an attractive one but she doesn't appeal to me now as any super-attractive lady as I once fancied.

Aili Kearns is one who is really charming - attractive looking, jolly, considerate, well groomed, well brought up.  And Doris Gouldthorpe, too, is a mighty fine girl - I've always had a spot in my heart for her (as well as Gouldy, who is always ace high).

Today, we celebrate three months of unbroken diary!  A rare accomplishment and a worthwhile one.  And this is by contrast, a rather uneventful day, which is always bad for no day should be uneventful to a person understanding how to live.  Went out for a walk on the Peninsula this afternoon and finally found the Fire Tower - the first time except at a distance, in all these years.  The leaves were nowhere near as brilliant
