Erie, Pa.
Oct. 31, 1938

Rudy told me today that he spent two hours last week talking to H.L.A. about the "Erie situation" after H.L. asked him what was "wrong with Erie." Evidently Maurice and Carl came in for a lot of unfavorable discussion. H.L. said Maurice had the energy and the ability but simply couldn't "run the job." Miss Germond had told H.L. that it was because of some of the men under Maurice that the job went at all. H.L. said he realized things were radically wrong but he didn't know who there was in Erie to put in the places of the incumbents. So there is idea of reorganization in H.L.'s mind.

Kjolseth is back from a week in N.Y. and reports nothing wrong with the riding of the 0361-66 which vindicates me 100% after Maurice jumped me on the subject recently. The water tanks however are a flop and we've got to do something about them. The 0361 burn-up is in the New Haven's lap and they have called in their insurance people to get a settlement.

Got a wire from Bert Pero that National Carbon Co. just bought a 35 ton diesel-electric from Baldwin-Westinghouse equipped. This was a job we had "in the bag" a couple of weeks ago - but the bag had a hole in it. Don't know where the slip was. Jake handled it, Jake now won't be back until Thursday.

Maurice and Spike had a royal battle today about the small diesels. Maurice not being satisfied with Spike's outlines. The curses flew hot and fast, but to Maurice's credit and Spike's they ended friendly. But was Spike frank! He told Maurice he didn't know what he was talking about, and he was god damned sick of it.
