Spent most of the day on the "grinder" job and straightening out a mess of Rudy's for the Gulf, Mobile Co Northern where he put out a cockeyed spec. and a quotation that didn't tie up with it.  It is interesting to clean up other people's jobs.  You learn a lot about how they do their work.  This job of Rudy's was just plain sloppy.  Recently, we edited Jake's bulletin on the small diesels and found it pretty heavy with gross exaggerations and actual misstatements of fact.  We toned it down which Jake probably won't like.

And Jake got back today.  Haven't had a chance to talk much to him yet but I think he's in a critical mood.  He asked me who authorized the 23 ton steeple cabs on the MO that's out - it was all foolishness.  He was red headed about the National Carbon job we lost.  Jake is full of energy but he isn't thorough - he does too much work, so much he doesn't have time to do it carefully.  And he has a faculty for alienating people, particularly in the districts and in the design departments.  But he is a worker!  And nothing fazes him.  He has plenty of nerve.

Rog in bed all day but no worse.  Went downtown for some cough medecine this evening and Mother asked to go with me.  I thought then, I imagine she wants to talk about something, and it is usually unpleasant whenever she wants to be alone with me.  Sure enough, she opened up on how she had to get rest in the afternoons and she supposed we thought she shouldn't.  She just [[underlined]] made [[/underlined]] an argument - there was something else I don't recall.  But I simply wouldn't argue and
