in the Navy. He has just returned from duty in China, and had some interesting things to say about the war. It was such an occasion that there was call for plenty of drinking and Roy mixes 'em pretty strong. We had about four before dinner, and after dinner we all go over to Repetta's house. He is local chief engineer for the Pocahontas Coal Co. & wasn't home when we arrived but his wife did the honors, a very pretty woman. The drinking continued and it got later and later. Finally Repetta arrived with an assistant both looking like a couple of coal miners fresh from the mines, having just installed a stoker somewhere. "Rep" acted tight and I thought he was pretty dizzy; so when Roy said to me, "You wouldn't think he was a Rhodes scholar, would you?" I almost fell over. When we left about 2:15AM, "Rep" came out to the car and said good-bye and told us "to be careful", and suddenly he was utterly different – sober, serious, gentlemanly. I got to bed at 2:30AM, which was sad because Tom, I knew, would be in bright and early tomorrow. But it was quite a different experience and I enjoyed most of it. Mrs. Roggenkamp was somewhat of a bore when she'd had too much to drink. But he was very interesting most of the time and I found the Repettas intriguing. She insisted I look them up the next time in Boston.
