no use of both Doc and me going, and I told him I thought it was a one man job ie – no Barrell required. But Maurice jumped me on that. If I didn't have this New England trip lined up next week, I'd like to go alone to Detroit and make a job out of it single handed. I could do it and I'm the logical man to do it. Maurice is afraid of [[underline]] Alco [[/underline]] competition this time; it's hard to believe when the "agreement" left such special jobs as Ford for us unquestionably.

Went home this noon to get Mother and took her to lunch, then to the library. I have seldom seen her in such a highly distraught state of mind. She said too she felt terribly – exhausted mentally and physically, and afraid of an actual breakdown. I'm hoping she'll snap out of it so she can go with me next Tuesday afternoon so I can get her established at the Onondaga. She gets no better here, and I think if once she can get established there and used to it, she'll be far better off very soon.

Finally brought a new tuxedo today – couldn't stand Cousin Charlie Crouse's suit any longer. Although it probably cost $150 at least against $35 for the new one, the latter is far more satisfying. I look like the "well dressed young man of 1939" and don't feel like a headwaiter in it. Tomorrow night it gets its debut at the Kahkwa Club where the Collinses have invited us.
