respective abodes. And tonight I really found Ernie to be a good companion, a voluble talker as usual but also a good listener.

Had a letter from Miss Germond today sending some diaries and cards and saying the Ford job has developed into a free-for-all with a flock of manufacturers bidding on it. Gee! I hope they can corral that job, and I wish I might be out there on the firing line on it. I ought to be; it's really my job and I think I could handle it if anybody can. But so it goes!

Here I am in Boston and not Detroit. The small diesels look promising on the B&M and Jack Tobin told me today he thought we had a better possibility on the small report than on the large one, and I really think he's right, I think there's a better chance of selling the small ones than the large right now.

Did a lot of tramping around outdoors today looking over Yard 13 and 12 and the Hoosac Tunnel Docks, the latter a "hole" if ever there was one, old dock houses with terrific curves going into them. Barrett says its a tough job but I didn't see anything today to indicate a 43 tonner couldn't do it.

Came back to the hotel about 4:30, plenty chilled from the wind, took a hot bath, had a drink on the roof, had dinner in the Coffee House, and then retired to my room for a quiet evening and to bed early after my 3:00 AM turning in this morning.
