Perk and I went downtown for lunch and I had another sample of behind-the-scenes G.E. activity that is very interesting. Perk asked me about the New York job and I told him what Cash had told me. When I came to the spot where Cash said the "lucky" man didn't know a thing about this yet, Perk laughed - he said [[underlined]] he [/underlined]] was the man, had been offered the job. Further discussion developed that the "offer" had been in this vein. "Whitey" Wilson had approached Perk, told him of the job and asked if he would be interested in it, to which Perk replied he wouldn't even consider it without first knowing the salary adjustment involved. "Whitey" told him that Andrews had recommended "Perk" as his choice. "Whitey" left however without "Perk" giving him an answer because of the salary angle, and that was the last "Perk" heard of it. Recalling "Cash's" remark to me that he saw no reason why Barnes should disapprove of the man selected because there was nothing in the man's record he could object to, I am just betting on the third man in the triangle whoever he may be. I don't think Perk's record would justify such a comment. Perk is an excellent engineer but his record otherwise is besmirched with such things as leaving the Company flat once, a battle with Earl Bill, resulting in his leaving that Section, and constant belly-aching climaxing in this Elfern argument even with Mr. Swope himself. I'm much interested to find out if my hunch is correct.
