I was very fond of her and of Jay too. Who would expect such a tragedy to overtake them apparently untouchable by such a thing. Some how, Jay is one of the last people I could associate tragedy with - so carefree and gay always.

Got some fixstif today and sprayed my latest cartoon. To my dismay, the carbon lines under the lead, which I used to get the general outline from the original sketch, turned blue! I purposely sprayed the original sketch first to be sure all was OK, but there was no carbon on that! So I've got to do it over again. And I am disturbed to think of the two I sent to Colliers. It they should keep either of them and spray them the same thing would happen! Well, I've learned something anyhow.

Also, today, I got a textbook on pencil drawing that should be a big help in perfecting my technique. I am all for this cartooning and believe my chances are good - far better than in my writing.

Uzzel came back today with a criticism of Mother's story, "The Clerk," and it was not very flattering. He harped on strong plotting and of course, it is not plotted that way. But he can't seem to appreciate at all that subtle, sweet quality that an author labors so hard to get into a story of this kind. It just shoots way over his head. I presume Mother will be very much disappointed.

Rog still has a slight fever so we're keeping him quiet. Feels good.
