This evening one of the youngsters from church stopped by at home to ask us to sign a petition urging Newman to reconsider his resignation. It was the first we had heard he had resigned and the boy was very vague about the whole thing so we wonder what his reasons are. There has always been something rather mysterious to me about Newman. I never have been able to quite figure him out. I have heard rumors about him - mysterious but indefinite. I wonder what it's all about. 

Went to Griswold Club tonight to hear Mr. Nick of Northern Equipment speak about the present crisis in America - economic, not war. Nick is a remarkably fine speaker and the picture he painted was not very cheerful but nevertheless had some hope in it. We all wonder these days where we're headed.
