Erie, Pa.
Thursday, May 4, 1939.
Had a session with Dr. Merriman his morning and my teeth were apparently in such good shape generally that he merely cleaned them and gave me an order for the G.E. to x-ray them completely for a check-up. So in the afternoon I had the x-rays taken which cost me $3.00 against about $10 if Merriman had done it, which I thought very decent of him--that is, not trying to take them himself.

It was a very nice day although a bit coolish and hazy, so having my car and spring fever, I bought a couple of sandwiches and drove out to Gospel Hill alone for a lunch sitting in the car overlooking the lowlands and the lake and the city. A bit too cool and hazy to get me 100% into the spring spirit, it nevertheless appealed to me greatly. I saw pretty clearly what I wanted--a game like I played at Shoals 15 years ago--that spirit. It is hard to describe but I know well what it is. Rectitude in everything. It is what I want and need.

Mother writes that "Uncle Oscar" Laighton died April 4 at Portsmouth. He would have been 100 years old on June 30th. What a life! There is a full life to shoot at. I remember him so well when we were at Shoals back in 1923 to 1925, then well over 80 and still with over 15 years to live! He drove his own car until he was 94! Something like Aunt Nellie Goodrich.
