Erie, Pa.
Tuesday, May 16, '39.
Woke up (after 4 1/2 hours sleep) with a piercing sore throat but otherwise feeling good although tired. Had Ken at the plant for a while this morning and then drove him to Union City to catch the 11:05 AM Erie train for Howell. We had lunch in a Union City saloon- sandwich and glass of beer- at 10:30 AM Union City time. I had intended to have Maynard drive Ken down but I thought the fresh air might brace me up so I did it myself and it worked out OK. Ken looked as though he had been dragged through the wringer and I guess I did too. Am not quite sure it was worth it.

Had a wire from Roy Goggin something like thus. "Marine Central has requested locomotive survey this and other will take approximately six weeks advise when convenient for you to start. " That has me on the spot with moving coming up, Decoration Day, Rog's birthday, Mother coming, etc. I am waiting to ask Cash tomorrow when he gets back from Sch'dy. Maybe they'll decide to discontinue the line. It couldn't come at a worse time.

Tried to interest Mark Hanna in the 6000 volt DC job for the Russians and simply couldn't get him to say anything except he wasn't interested. Couldn't even get him to set a time for a conference. Gave up until tomorrow.

Willie and I went to the combined AIEE-ASME "Ladies Night" at the Church of the Covenant
