                    Friday, May 19, 1939
  Worked all morning on miscellaneous things, rather expecting to hear from Roy Goggins re my New England trip but no word came and I left for Syracuse right after lunch. I was almost leery of leaving for fear Jake would grab a chance to hone in on New England while I was away -- even for half a day. "Doc" Gillihan had a minor operation on his arm day before yesterday and Jake literally took the Wabash job away from him while he was out, even including a trip to Pittsburgh Wednesday all unasked by anyone.
  We left the plant at 1:10 PM and were in Syracuse at the Onondaga at 8:45 PM after having spent 1 1/2 hours of continuous dinner eating at Krebs - Willie had never been there and wanted to. It was up to all reports - we were so stuffed we could scarcely walk. The ride was very lovely - a beautiful day and everything in bloom gloriously - apple trees loveliest of all. I have been unable to stave off the cold and my head was stuffed up miserably so I couldn't fully enjoy things but I enjoyed it considerably. The fresh loveliness of everything simply crashed through everything and demanded recognition.
  Of course Mother was delighted to see us. Rosemary was with her, Freddie being at class. He's
