concern by Freddie (and probably by Rosemary herself). She seems a mighty fine girl- genuine, kind, unassuming. I don't believe she would be considered quite in Freddies social class in Rome but Fred always seemed to lean away from his own class. I always felt there was a nigger in the woodpile somewhere in the family and I suspect it was Freddie's father. I think Mrs. Thalman married outside her class. To me, the story of the Thalmans might be written into a novel showing the fall of an old American family as represented by Mrs. Thalman, and her marriage and the lives and alliances of her children including her adopted daughter and the interrelations of them all.

Freddie made a point to suggest he and I go down to the bar for a beer and when alone he told me the story of Carol and his difficulties with his family because he refuses to have anything to do with Carol - not because of her "fall" but because he claims he has evidence that Carol is just a plain lowlife, hypocrite and is fooling them all. Freddie says he hasn't had a meal in his Mother's house for 2 years, has spoken to his sister Rhoda once in 4 years. And Eric Rhoda's husband, who has a big job in the wire industry at Rome, wont do a thing for Fred in a business way. It's queer. So we broke up about midnight, promise to see each other sooner next time.
