"streamlined ferry." Saw a charming old red brick Unitarian Church dated 1816 sitting in its own veritable "village green." Sat for a while in the park up on the bluff above the lake with a magnificent view across Lake Champlain to the Adirondacks, Marcy jutting up above the vista of range on range pale blue in the distance. It was a gorgeous day - sunny and clear, although it rained most of the morning in Montpelier.

Then I took the ferry intending to make the round trip to Fort Kent taking two hours. The boats are new, diesel powered, all welded and chromium trimmed - quite neat. We had just left the slip when I saw a familiar face on the upper deck - it looked like Putnam, V.P. of the Montpelier & Wells River, etc. He had on glasses which changed his appearance some and I wasn't sure at first. He had his wife and two boys with him. It was evident he didn't recognize me and not surprising because the sun and wind made one squint and blew the hair every which way. Finally sure, I went up and spoke to him with the result that I joined them and drove with them up to Rouse's Point down through the islands of the lake and back to Montpelier with a stop at Burlington for supper, which I bought. It was a lovely drive and I found them all very pleasant. The two boys were 11 and 8, nice looking lads, and the younger made me think so much of Rog, I couldn't keep my eyes off him. We were within a stone's throw of the border and in the English-French sign territory - saw the Richelieu River for the first time where it leaves the lake for the St. Lawrence. So it developed I was lucky to miss the excursion and the day turned out well.

Neil blew in about 11 PM after I'd gone to sleep and we had a talk in my room. Also Alf Landon was in town this weekend visiting Gov. Aiken - had a dinner for him today at the Tavern but I missed the chance to see him.

Montpelier, Vt.
Monday, June 5, 1939.
We were up at 5 AM and had breakfast in a slovenly lunch wagon where the rats walked along outside on the window sills, believe it or not! Then we went over to the engine house to catch the Montpelier and Barre switcher. We were early so had a chance to look over the shop, a place with rather crude facilities and yet
