Montpelier, Vt.
Monday, June 12 '39

Had breakfast at Hotel Kimball in Springfield and caught the 8:30 AM B&M train for White River Jct. arriving there at 12:35 PM. What a ride! Over four hours for a little over 100 miles! But the scenery was lovely and helped considerably. Neil wasn't at the Coolidge when I arrived but he got in about 1:00 PM Std. We started out at once for Montpelier via Hanover, Oxford, Fairlee and Bradford. Fairlee looked very natural and was sorry I couldn't skip over to Shanty Shane but we were in a hurry. Got established at the Tavern, just missing Putnam so made a date with him for 8:30 AM tomorrow. Saw Thomas but he made no mention of the spaghetti dinner (to our disappointment) so we ate dinner at Tavern and then took in the "Tent Show", a one night stand affair over near Barre with the usual Loop-a-Plane, Beano, ferris wheel, sex show, "girlie" show, etc. Saw "Harry", the Tavern bartender there with one of the waitresses, so decided he was backsliding from his wife a trifle. We wandered around and around and wished we were young and free for the evening with a couple of gals to ride the cars with us. Alone that way it was pretty dull. We saw the pretty Italian waitress from the Barre Venetian Garden Restaurant (the one I won 25ยข from Neil on her nationality) and she looked mighty attractive riding a whirling swing affair with a boyfriend - such pretty legs! We spent little, walked much, and went home early, rather disappointed the evening had proved somewhat duller than we had hoped.

Spent the evening with Putnam on his operating costs and got a good story. I think I can make a report that will be OK but doubt if anything but St. Johnsbury will look very attractive. We tried to take him to lunch but he declined saying he was going home - knew we understood. We can't quite figure him out. He looks as though he was a hell raiser but we can't seem to get under his crust. But he's OK; nice chap. And maybe some day we can do some business with him. Here's hoping. Thomas had gone to Rutland for the day so again all hope of the spaghetti dinner faded away and we embarked
