En route to Schenectady
Tuesday, June 20, 1939.
Today was one of the most hectic I've had in some time. I had to get my work cleaned up to go Sch'dy, tonight. I had to spend a lot of time with Linebaugh discussing and editing his criticism's of the memorandum Don MacLeod and I wrote on the 6000 volt Amtorg request, and to make matters worse Don was away. I think I made out pretty well with old Liney, satisfying him without impairing the gist of our discussion; but it was rather a trying session. Then Maurice handed me a couple of Youngstown Street & Tube men, Stubblefeld and Morse, ordinarily Perk's job but he had left to drive to Sch'dy with his family. They were coming to see the stock 23 ton job and we had a pack of trouble but it was too late to head them off: (1) The loco was on Track 2 at Bldg. 60 [[underlined]] behind [[/underlined]] the U.P. on test and we couldn't get it out of the building (2) We were going to lift it to Tr.2 with the crane but that meant disconnecting all the leads on the U.P. which ran across Track 1 (3) Finally when we had decided to just run it up and down in the building, they tried to start the engine and found the starting ring gear broken so it couldn't be started. And about then they arrived and I had the pleasant job of trying to smooth them over and sell the job to them. How well I made out only time will tell but they [[underlined]] seemed [[/underlined]] sympathetic and fairly well impressed with the midget. And then mother called up from downtown where she had been to the dentist and said she was terribly upset by something he had said - had told her he hoped the Bureau of Investigation wouldn't get after her (joking about the large gold filling he had put in). Rudy and Miss Lang were there beside me and I had a time explaining to Mother what he meant without sounding awfully funny to them. I had wanted to leave at 4 PM because I had to catch the 6:50 PM Std. train; instead I finally got away
