The Pittsfield Works then took over with the theme that ran through the whole program "On Our Toes!" When it started the curtain parted and a pretty toe dancer stepped through, did a few steps and slipped off into the wings. Then came a long series of talks on Pittsfield's various lines, delivered by engineers and factory men to show what was being accomplished in improved design, reduced costs and better shipments. They kept hammering on these points throughout the program so no one could fail to be inspired. The rumor is that the district men were beginning to feel generally that the Company is slipping and the whole underlying motive and theme of the entire program is to disabuse their minds of this idea. And I believe a good job is being done to accomplish it. The speakers were all remarkably good, shop men and all. The man who made perhaps the biggest hit was Ramsey, Foreman of the Transformer Tank Shop. When he concluded he said in a most earnest way, "Gentlemen, I [[underlined]] like [[/underlined]] to build tanks! There's nothing sweeter to my ears tha[[strikethrough]]t[[/strikethrough]]n the sound of a tank shop in full swing! And I want you all to get more transformer orders so I can keep building more and more tanks!" The utterly sincere way in which he said it simply brought down the house. Clark gave a very interesting talk on his development of Pyranol. Slater referred to power transformers as being in that same class as turbine-generators and locomotives, among "the chosen things of God."

We had luncheon at the Mohawk Golf Club and I sat with HLA which gave me a chance to get the low down on Church. Much to my amazement, Andy didn't seem to have any enthusiasm for him at all and told
