We conducted the test to find out how much an Alco 600HP would handle between Yd.8 and Rigby. Tom said the only grade was "500 ft. of 0.9%." We asked for about 2000 tons and wound up with what the yardmaster, Quincy, said was about 1900. We essayed the run and stalled on the grade which looks to me like less than 0.9% but is more like 2000 ft. long. So we cut off 4 battleships of coal and tried again, thinking we had about 1500 tons. We made that OK but it looked like about the limit. So then we decided to check the car weights; the engineer swore we had 2200 tons the first time. We weighed some cars and found we had 2200 tons the first time and 1800 the second time! And I christened Quincy, "Yardmaster and plain and fancy tonnage estimator extraordinary." We set the limit at 1500 tons for year round as it was ideal today. 

Alone with Tom after the test, I inquired how the B&M deal was coming along and what the reaction from the Buffalo trip to check Alco and EM records was. Tom said, "You weren't supposed to know anything about that - none of you fellows were but it got around someway. Who told you about it?" I demurred telling him because it made me kind of mad. I finally let him know it was a GE man and that's all. But it was such a swell example of Tom's tactlessness. Why in hell shouldn't I know about it! Or various other G.E. people either? Roy Goggin engineered the thing. But Tom acts "deep stuff" - high and mighty in the upper realms of management. Then Tom asked me outright what we were doing up here.
