Another funny episode today. Taft and I were in the office and they had a supply of used golf balls for sale. So Taft, know Collis wanted to get some used balls for practice, bought 5 10 ct balls for him, expecting Collis would gladly pay him 50ct for them. To Taft's amazement, Collis flatly refused to take them, suspecting another hoax, especially as one ball was labelled "New Deal." Collis was egged on by Doc Atwell and Tommy Atkins, the "barkeeper type" little florid chunky fellow who plays with Doc a lot. They told him the balls would probably explode or rebound or boomerang, etc, etc. Collis was really thoroughly suspicious and would have nothing to do with them at all - all of which was cause for much ribbing by Taft, and the rest.

Winston was in a good mood, directing the band with his cane at one time. His daughter was there, a rather pretty, very well developed, precocious child for 11 1/2 years old. It's
