Shanty Shane
Friday, Aug.11,1939
The last full day at the Shane and a big one! We drove to Fairlee to do some shopping and met the Tafts there. He said they were going to drive over to Orford and around a bit so we trailed them and drove toward Wentworth, stopping at Baker Pond where Pemigewasset Camp is ("Pemmie") where Bud Bowers is. Then we went on to Wentworth to see the Morse Museum. But we discovered that's in Warren. So we wound up in Warren and went all through the Morse Museum, a very interesting place, privately owned and gratis, which contains all the big game trophies, and miscellaneous stuff Mr. [[^Ira]] Morse, a former shoe man, and his son and brother have collected from all over the world but majority from Africa. It is on the grounds of his summer home and in back is a pond full of rainbow trout that Mr. Morse provides the public stale bread to feed. They are swarming and leap out of the water like flashes to get it. He allows no fishing. We met Mr.Ira Morse himself and had quite a chat with him. He has made immense world cruises - started his collection by accumulating various odd shoes which he would exhibit in his store windows such as Chinese shoes for bound feet, etc, and from that branched out into other lines including big game hunting. We got back to Shane about 1:30 PM, almost missing lunch, and also just missing being punished by a New Hampshire state trooper who tailed us carefully for several miles waiting for an opening which I was very careful not to give him. Guess we just looked suspicious or he intuitively knew we had been speeding prior to encountering him, as we were late for lunch, and rushing back fast as possible.
