Between Rog kicking and rolling over me and the New York Central trunk line and heavy motor truck movements along NY 5 all night, my sleep was none too good. However we retired early and probably got more sleep than we thought and felt pretty well this morning. The slight inconvenience was better than $7 out of pocket and the Hotel Utica is hardly a sanctuary of peace and quiet, even at $10 a night. So we were well pleased with ourselves.

Had Sunday breakfast in a small Herkimer hotel, and with uncommon good luck dodging rain we went over the hills of the Empire State and home on State Street at 6 PM. Supper at Pulalcos and home.

And the first thing we found at home was a note from Ann saying she had been recalled to the gE and wouldn't be with us tomorrow! It was a body blow! It seemed like our whole family life was about to collapse under the impact. It assumed entirely false proportions under the circumstances - all the work washing prodigious piles of vacation soiled clothes - the house to clean up - out of practice working - Willie would lose the 5 pounds she gained at Shane and on and on. Somehow, I even found it affecting my future with the G.E.Co. It assumed collosal proportions of disaster. But after much philosophizing, we managed to pull ourselves together, unpack wearily and finally get to bed. The ragweed had gone on a Roman holiday and flourished mightily all over the lawn which resembled a jungle as seen from an airplane. But the house looked good to us - and it wasn't bad to be home again. But alas - Ann! It will be a job to replace her with anyone who can really take her efficient, amiable place.
