may be war in Europe and the democracies with their backs to the wall without Russia's help, which they have been trying desperately to get for several months, only to let Hitler slip in and conclude a secret negociation that leaves them flat footed! Proud England and France appear to be on the skids and the Nazi star rising higher by the minute. I've come to the point where I don't worry any more, come what may. But this promises to be another tense weekend akin to that last year about this time over Chzecho-Slovakia. Thank God, at least we live on this side of the ocean!

Had a tough day at the office trying to get going on my A.I.E.E. paper, delving into old articles, etc. to get generally wised up on the subject. But it was rather dull going and hard to keep awake. Except for this AIEE paper, I have no active jobs now being in one of those in between times that usually preceed a period of great activity so let us hope this is no exception.

We heard today we are low bidder on diesel-electrics for the Panama Railroad, one of Jake's jobs, but as the Gov't called for bids on both steam and diesel, it doesn't mean yet we get the job. Jake is going to Washington tomorrow might try to show them how the diesel will "save them money." More power to him! We need the work.

Had a note from Neal Donovan saying the Mt. Washington Railway got looped for $70,000 by the hurricane and aren't interested in a diesel-electric now but will be later. I think when the Pikes Peak told them theirs cost $43,000, it scared them.

Heard the Ambers-Armstong fight tonight - a 15 round lulu in which Ambers regained the lightweight crown by a decision.
