My major undertaking today was to mow the grass which appeared to be a huge weed patch. But it was amazing what a mowing, raking and second mowing did to it. It really looked quite presentable and the weeds simply disappeared! The house begins to look well settled too - some things to do but rather minor ones at last. Willie has done a good job on it in a hundred little ways.

Willie told me today of a move by Barbara Reed that hurt me. Willie had a bridge party lined up for the girls particularly to introduce them to the new house. About 9 AM of the day (I was away), Barbara phoned and said she was going to Cleveland to do some shopping because she saw an ad that attracted her in the Cleveland paper. That was bad enough to drop out at the last minute but to cap the climax, she called Maybelle and persuaded her to go. She called Rosalind too but she refused. So the bridge party had six present instead of eight! I hate to have someone I like as well as Barbara pull a stunt like that; it really hurts. It doesn't seem like her somehow.

We are all lined up for Shanty Shane for July 30 to August 12th and I think it will be a swell vacation - even better than last year.

I enjoy having the Colonel around - he's good company. The only real difficulty here is his serious inability to back his car out of the driveway. He zigzgs back and forth over lawn and in danger of crashing the house, flower beds, etc. He never could learn to back a car right. He is completely won over to the house - thinks it's a honey. I wish Mother were as well won.
